November 12, 1996 AGENDA FOR OS/2 SIG MEETINGS 6:00 p.m. Novices' pre-meeting (question and answer (Q&A), installation assistance, etc.) (NOTE: This is a feature of both Maryland and Virginia SIG meetings.) 7:00 p.m. General SIG business, including: General Q&A Announcements Product news/rumors SIG news 8:00 p.m. Feature presentation, Donna Walker (Anderson-Burnett Corporation), "We All Run in a Virtual (DOS) Machine." About the program: ----------------- Our speaker will discuss OS/2's Virtual DOS Machine (VDM) capabilities. These capabilities allow you to operate multiple DOS sessions, each in their own protected environment. In addition, virtual DOS machines allow you to boot your favorite version of DOS in a separate session, as if it were running in its own computer. Do you have a DOS application that needs more memory? Do you use a special print driver for your word processing program? Put them in a VDM! About the speaker: ----------------- Donna Walker is a senior system engineer and architect working on the IRS's Tax Systems Modernization effort. She has more than 20 years of experience working inside IBM's mainframe operating systems, including IBM's original (mainframe) Virtual Machine operating system. Meeting Specials!!! ------------------- Again this month, Advanced Computer Creations (Laurel, MD) is donating raffle prizes for this month's meetings: 8 Megabytes of 60 nanosecond EDO memory to add to your existing system. This is particularly intended to help those who would like to move to Merlin but have less than the recommended 24 Megabytes. If the winners' systems' (one each in MD and VA) cannot use EDO memory, an appropriate substitute will be provided. If you'd like to see other OS/2 offers from Advanced Computer Creations (ACC), visit their Web site at http://www.acctoday.com (OS/2 preloaded systems are listed in the "Business Systems" category). SIG PUBLICITY Our parent organization, CPCUG, has changed the format of its General Meeting slightly, better to meet the needs of those who attend. General meetings now begin with a 30-minute presentation by one of the SIGs. These SIG presentations precede the feature presentation. Both the September and October "pre-meeting" presentations were sponsored by the OS/2 SIG. For the General Meeting on 14 October, Lem Geathers demonstrated the voice capabilities included in Merlin. OS/2 SIG MAIL LIST PROCESSOR The OS/2 SIG's mail list processor, hosted by Pete Norloff and the OS/2 Shareware BBS, is used for SIG business only.
